Biking The New Path In North Minneapolis

E-mail Print PDF

On Saturday September 5th, a few people gathered on the Victory Memorial Drive at 31st to bike down the new Lowry Avenue bike path (Lane)  to the river and back.

It was a beautiful day and I regretted not borrowing a bike to ride along.  The ride was scheduled to start at 11 am.  Officer Mark Klukow was on hand with his wife and two year old son.  I met David Peterson who is the  Research, Development and Campaigns Ambassador for the Bike Walk Ambassador Program, which  is part of the Minneapolis Public Works department.  According to the Bike ambassador Program brochure, the Ambassadors provide free information and support to help people start bicycling and walking as active transportation.

The Ambassadors are available to give presentations, lead safety clinics or bike rides and walks, and host events year-round.  Ambassadors help individuals and organizations learn how to reach destinations on foot or by bike.  The program also has bikes to use for rides.  The Bike Walk Ambassador program is an education and outreach program is a partnership between the City of Minneapolis and the Bike Walk Twin Cities initiative and encourages people to bike more, walk more and drive less.

Bike Walk Ambassador Program Serves:

Minneapolis, Columbia Heights, Falcon Heights, Golden Valley, Richfield, Roseville, St. Louis Park, Brooklyn Center, Edina, Fridley, Lauderdale, Robbinsdale, Saint Anthony, St. Paul.

The Bike/Walk Twin Cities Ambassadors program specializes in employer, community, higher education, and youth outreach and programing.

The intiative, administered by Transit for Livable Communities, is part of the Federal Non-Motorized Transportation Pilot Project (NTP), which aims to get more people bicycling and walking by 2010.

It is our mission to increase biking and walking as a part of transportation in Minneapolis and its neighbroing communities.  Through grassroots outreach and education we encourage people to bike more, walk more, and drive less!

Even though I didn't ride, the view looking down Lowry towards the river was absolutely beautiful.  It reminded me of a highway that is about to enter a small town.  It didn't seem like an inner-city view.  The view seemed surreal, like finding one's self between two worlds.
