On Tuesday evening, December 15th, Minneapolis police officers in cooperation with Target Stores held “Shop with a Cop” for children from the PAL (Police Activity League) program at the downtown Target store. A second “Shop With A Cop” event will be held Thursday evening at the Lake Street Target store.
I couldn't wait until after Thursday's event to share the moments captured for everyone to see. A video compilation of both nights will be available after the final shopping extravaganza.
Kids enjoyed hot chocolate as they geared up to shop. Each child received a $200 gift card to spend on Christmas shopping; $100 was to be spent on family members and the remaining $100 could be spent on themselves. With calculators in hand and a police officer in tow they were off to make their selections.
Some of the children had prepared lists, and the police officers listened to what the kids had to say about what brothers, sisters, mom and dads wanted. A lot of thought went into the gifts. Some of the kids bought cookware for their moms and pillows for their dads. It was heartwarming to see one little guy sitting on an officer's knee while another officer was testing out winter boots on his little feet to see which ones fit properly.
One little boy had a minor melt down searching for the right presents. He was afraid he wouldn't have enough time to buy everything. Fortunately he was able to take his time after he understood that there was no time limit on the adventure. Later, as he stood at the checkout, he said a big "Thank you" to the cashier.
Their parents should be very proud that the group was so well mannered. Everyone had a good time including the "big kids" with the badges. Thursday’s group should be just as exciting to witness.
Enjoy the first of the two part shopping adventure in pictures below.
